WHAT IS AYURVEDA?
According to Charaka Samhita, Ayurveda is defined as
                                 हितहितं सुखं दुखं आयुस्तस्य हितहितं |
                                 मानं च तच्च यत्रोक्तं आयुर्वेदः स उच्यते||
Ayurveda is a science that helps us to lead a healthy and long life through guiding us with favorable and non-favorable things for four aayus (hitayu, ahitayu, sujhayu and dukhayu)
Ayurveda is regarded as a traditional healthcare system of India, which is now being adopted in western culture as well. The main objective of Ayurveda is the prevention of the disease. Though the herbal treatment takes time to cure a disease but Though the herbal treatment takes time to cure a disease the cause is eliminated from the root.
Ayurveda is divided into 8 branches mentioned as below-
1) kayachikitsa (internal medicine)
2) shalya tantra (general surgery)
3) shalakya tantra (otorhinolaryngology)
4) kaumarbhritya (pediatrics and gynecology)
5) bhutavidya (psychiatry)
6) agada tantra (toxicology)
7) rasayana tantra (detoxification and rejuvenation)
8) vajikarana (fertility)
Thus we can see that such an old system of medicine was studied systematically and is relevant to today’s modern studies.
